Kate Middleton is an international fashion icon and royal fans were delighted to see her bold suit dress on Commonwealth Day this week. However, one expert has noticed a fashion faux pas that may have completely ruined the “stunning” outfit.
Princess Kate arrived at Westminister Abbey alongside Prince William for the Commonwealth Day service. She wore a £3,000 ($3,650) dark blue dress suit which featured a white floral pattern by the Canadian fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu.
While many royal fans enjoyed Princess Kate’s bold look, some fashion experts feel the outfit was a disappointment due to one obvious mistake.
Miranda Holder is an acclaimed stylist who has worked with a variety of celebrities in her career. She enjoys sharing her expertise about royal fashion on her TikTok page @themirandaholder.
Miranda recently made a new video in which she goes into detail about “the little detail that ruined Kate’s Commonwealth outfit.”

She said: “Don’t get me wrong, I love this outfit. The lines, the silhouette, the cut, and the fabric are absolute perfection.
“It’s fashion-forward enough to keep us excited and demure enough to be appropriate for the occasion and for her position as the Princess of Wales.”
The fashion expert complimented some of the attention to detail by Princess Kate with the outfit choice. Miranda said: “She toned in beautifully with our Queen Camilla and the fact she chose to wear Erdem, a Canadian-born designer based in London is a lovely little nod to the Commonwealth making it the perfect choice.”
The expert said Kate’s jewellery was “spot on.” Miranda added: “Diana’s sapphire and diamond earrings right there are gorgeous, as is the Princess of Wales brooch, the perfect accents.”
However, Miranda has spotted one big mistake which may have taken away from the stylish outfit. Miranda said: “But there was one element that in my mind simply let the whole look down. The hat.
“Very simply, it’s the wrong shade of navy. Admittedly it looks slightly different colours in different lights, but this wasn’t fully or properly colour matched beforehand, and sadly I think this takes away from the finished look.”
Miranda asked her followers: “What do you think? Is it a near enough match, or do you agree with me that if you’re going to go marchy-matchy, you need to get the colours just right?”
In the comment section, royal fans were divided on Princess Kate’s fashion mistake. “One user wrote: “The first thing I noticed was the hat. I definitely agree with you” while another commentator said: “Princess Catherine has had better hat days for sure. It was a little underwhelming… you’re absolutely right.”
Another person felt the mismatched hat “sadly brought the whole outfit down.”
However, there were many commentators who defended the hat choice. Some comments pointed out that while the hat does not perfectly match Princess Kate’s dress, it was the extract same colour as Prince William’s tie. One popular comment said: “Matches perfectly to Williams tie. It brings the whole combination completely together.”
Other people said that Princess Kate looked “perfect” and “lovely”. One fan said: “I think she looks stunning and the hat doesn’t even register for me.”
One passionate fan had their own fashion opinion and wrote: “Why does an outfit have to be matchy these days? Throw caution to the wind and break the mould, go daring….at least you know you will be noticed.”
