Having recently won the Rolling Stone Global Musician Award 2023, Tash Sultana has accumulated billions of streams and is considered to be one of the biggest names in Australian Music.
The gender fluid artist who not only writes their songs, but also plays all instruments and produces their own records is about to go on a massive European and North American tour.
Tash speaks about newly released single James Dean and is candid about the meaning behind the song’s lyric ‘ I sever ties with things that don’t serve any purpose to me anymore’.
The theme of challenging friendships and feeling let down is universal and will be sure to resonate with listeners.
They describe how they are “Pretty cut throat. You know, I do not like to waste my time.
“I hate when I feel really disrespected because I feel like I give everyone a really even tier level of respect…You don’t need to like everyone in the world, and not everyone needs to like you” they say with refreshing honesty and a real emotional maturity.
This fierce individuality and drive has clearly cultivated huge success, with Tash creating everything themself- even the stunning album artwork.
Tash’s psychedelic aesthetic is epitomised in the trademark vibrant mushroom image which is reflective of their hugely charismatic and colourful persona.
In anticipation of their upcoming shows at the Hammersmith Apollo and Wolverhampton Civic Hall, Tash says that London shows are their favourite to play for their intensity and the unpredictable crowds.
At a previous show, Tash says one audience member emailed her management to complain that the performer was a hologram, with Tash concluding that the guy was actually standing next to them the entire time.
“He was either schizophrenic, or lying, or both!”, laughing at the sheer absurdity of it.
On a more serious note, they add that “There is the issue of mental health. Fans go there, there’s a lot riding on the show. People approach you before the show with messages. It’s a deeper experience for most people at the gig than just going for a piss up”.
Tash is excited to play every single song from their highly successful MTV Unplugged session in which the channel gave full creative control, joking that “I must have really charmed MTV for them to do that!”
On the tour, they will incorporate a custom loop system which creates everything on the spot, and is the only one of its type in the world.
Tash’s two upcoming dates this month are set to be a phenomenal spectacle from a multi talented global star which is surely not to be missed.
