Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner shook off a bout of laryngitis to headline the main stage at Glastonbury last night (Friday, June 23).
The band made their third headline appearance at the festival to an enthusiastic reception from the crowd.
But elsewhere the verdict was less favourable, with some viewers watching at home comparing Turner to Vic Reeves in his club singer persona, causing the comedian to trend on Twitter.
Turner, in a black suit and white shirt paired with dark sunglasses, was also compared to Nick Cave and to an Elvis impersonator, among others.
A Twitter user called Lucy wrote: “Twitter makes me howl! So far people have said Alex Turner looks like: a poor man’s Nick Cave, Roy Orbison, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vic Reeves and Richard Hammond.”
Talbotski tweeted a picture of Turner on stage and captioned it: “Popped Tony Angelino, Vic Reeves, Richard Hammond, Alan Partridge and David Brent’s Cuban heels into the Hadron Collider earlier, et voila!”
MunchBunch tweeted: “Aww this is unbearable to listen to even old favourites like Fluorescent Adolescent being sung Vic Reeves pub singer style. Early night. At least I didn’t pay to stand crushed in a field 1/4 mile away to listen to this disappointment.”
And BrighterBeat wrote: “Yes, it’s almost 20 years on from the Beneath the Boardwalk demos, but the Arctic Monkeys WERE fast, fun, cynical, sharp, northern powerhouses of indie rock… not the Vic Reeves 1970s lounge singer crooner band they’ve become… (and I’m old enough to remember).”
The Worthy Farm crowd still seemed to get behind the band as they revisited their chart-topping back catalogue as well as performing tracks from their 2022 release The Car.
Earlier this week, the band announced Turner had acute laryngitis, which forced them to cancel their show in Dublin on Wednesday.
The tens of thousands of festival-goers appeared to approve of the set-list as they belted it back.
After a brief spell at the piano, Turner brought the energy back up for their 2013 song Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High, following up with Arabella and Fluorescent Adolescent.
Before launching into Mardy Bum, Turner said: “How do you feel everybody? I’m glad to be back.”
Arctic Monkeys are on a world tour and since the start of the year they have performed across Australia, Asia and the UK.
They ended the encores with I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and an electric rendition of R U Mine?
