Skin care tips for your 40s and 50s – ‘wrinkle fighting’ and ‘smoothing’ ingredients

It’s no secret that prevention is better than a cure when it comes to caring for the skin which is why establishing an effective routine at a young age is always recommended.

But for those who don’t have the luxury of perfecting their skincare routine over decades, there are certain products that still work at the age of 50 and beyond.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, aesthetics specialist and advisor to Hada Labo Tokyo skincare, Dr Noman Mohamed suggested that skincare should be tailored to each decade of life to reflect the natural ageing process.

And while it’s important for people in their twenties and thirties it’s even more crucial for perimenopausal women who want to look younger.

The skin expert explained that people in their forties and fifties should look to “wrinkle-fighting” and “smoothing” ingredients.

Dr Noman said: “When women reach their forties there is a more dramatic change in their skin.

“Perimenopause and menopause cause collagen and elastin production to reduce even further, leading to skin looking dry and thinner than usual.”

To combat this natural side effect of ageing, the skin expert recommended using hydrating products containing multiple hyaluronic acids.

He noted that these are “essential” for water-based hydration which helps maintain a plump and elastic complexion.

The skin aesthetics expert suggested using Hada Labo Tokyo’s Ultra Firming Booster 5 x HA Day Cream-in-Milk.

He claimed that it is “a powerful firming and moisturising cream of milk consistency” that contains five hyaluronic acids which are “super moisturising”.

What’s more, ingredients like this often boast a “filling and wrinkle-smoothing effect” on mature skin.

Just as hydration is pivotal to preventing premature ageing in younger years, it is also key for older women.

Dr Noman said: “This continues into the fifties and beyond, making caring for skin essential and keeping it hydrated and moisturised – vital to avoid dry, tight, flaky and thin skin.”

Formulations with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and niacinamide are effective to combat dryness, though prevention should also be at the forefront of mature skin care.

The skin expert urged: “When in the sun, whatever age, always wear SPF 50.”
