28 Days Later sequel trilogy announced with Danny Boyle returning to direct | Films | Entertainment

Back in 2002, Cillian Murphy starred in zombie thriller 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland.

The low-budget horror was a hit and met with critical acclaim, with a sequel called 28 Weeks Later arriving in 2007.

Boyle and Garland were only executive producers on the follow-up, which concluded with the British-born virus spreading to mainland Europe.

For years there were rumours of a 28 Months Later, but now the pair are teaming up to write and direct 28 Years Later.

Considering the time that’s past (22 years and counting) this makes a lot of sense.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 28 Years Later is planned to be the start of a trilogy of sequels. The outlet’s multiple sources report that the film will be considered for purchase by studios and streamers this week.

Boyle will direct the first movie, while Garland is planning on writing all three of the $75 million-a-piece blockbusters. The question is, will Cillian Murphy’s Jim, who survived the first film, but didn’t return for the sequel be back?
