Liz Cheney clumsily attacks Trump over Jan. 6: ‘Spewing nonsense in all caps doesn’t change the facts’

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) hit back at former President Trump’s recent demand for her prosecution over supposed evidence withholding and testimony from the House Jan. 6 committee investigation.

“Lying in gigantic letters doesn’t magically make it true, Donald. You and your legal team have known about the evidence for a long time,” Cheney shot back on Sunday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Cheney reposted a screenshot from Trump’s Sunday post on Truth Social, where he screamed in all caps, “SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO OUR COUNTRY! SHE ILLEGALLY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE. UNREAL!!!”

Trump’s outburst was linked to an article published in The Federalist by former Trump aide Kash Patel, alleging that Cheney and the House Jan. 6 committee suppressed evidence concerning Trump’s authorization of National Guard troops during the Capitol insurrection.

In a follow-up post, Cheney emphasized that Trump was well aware that his accusations were false.

“You’ve had access to all grand jury and J6 transcripts for months. You’re scrambling to delay your 1/6 trial because key figures like your VP, WH counsel, aides, campaign staff, and DOJ officials will testify against you. The truth terrifies you, and rightfully so.”

Cheney, a former representative and vice-chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, has been a vocal critic of Trump, holding him responsible for instigating the Capitol riots. She ultimately lost her seat in the 2022 primaries to a Trump-endorsed challenger, Rep. Harriet Hagemen (R-Wyo.).

The ongoing dispute over Jan. 6 evidence arises following a House Republicans’ report on the Capitol attack, which aimed to discredit the initial congressional investigation and absolve Trump of any wrongdoing before the upcoming election.

The report contends that the now-defunct Jan. 6 committee engaged in a biased inquiry aimed at damaging the former president. It included details contradicting former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony related to Trump’s actions on Jan. 6.

Trump faces four felony charges for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, including his alleged involvement in the January 6 incident. The trial for this case has been postponed as the Supreme Court deliberates on whether presidential immunity protects Trump from prosecution for his actions on that day.

Trump’s legal team maintains that he cannot be prosecuted for actions undertaken during his presidency.
