One of the best British films of all time is now streaming for free | Films | Entertainment

Loosely based on John Buchan’s 1915 novel of the same name, The 39 Steps was ranked the fourth greatest British film of all time in a BFI poll of industry professionals.

Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller follows a man who is mistaken for the murder of a counter-espionage agent.

He ends up going on the run to Scotland as he becomes entangled in preventing a spy organisation called the 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets.

Orson Welles called this film starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll “a masterpiece”.
