According to a report by Bloomberg on Monday, Apple is currently in discussions to license Google’s Gemini model in order to enhance AI features like Siri in a forthcoming iPhone software update set to launch later this year. Similar talks have also been held with ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

If the integration of Google Gemini into iOS 18 goes ahead, Apple’s smartphone could see a range of new cloud-based AI-powered features, such as image creation and essay writing based on simple prompts. However, details regarding the agreement terms and branding are still being finalized, and the implementation specifics remain uncertain. Any potential deal is unlikely to be announced until Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

This partnership with Google could potentially provide new capabilities to Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, which has been criticized for falling behind newer AI assistants powered by large language models. Reports suggest that Apple has been developing its own AI models, including a large language model codenamed Ajax and a basic chatbot called Apple GPT. However, industry experts believe that a partnership with Google or another AI provider may be a more appealing option due to the company’s LLM technology lagging behind competitors.

Google’s Gemini, launched in December, is considered to be roughly as capable as OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo by many experts in the industry. The potential partnership between Apple and Google could have a significant impact on the AI industry, given Apple’s vast user base of over 2 billion active devices worldwide. However, this potential partnership may face regulatory scrutiny, as the companies’ current search deal is already under investigation by the US Department of Justice and facing pressure from the European Union.

As Apple continues to explore partnerships with AI providers, such as Google and OpenAI, the tech industry eagerly anticipates the potential advancements in AI technology that may result from these collaborations.
