Captain America’s brutal fight scene almost went ‘too far’ – ‘It was real’ | Films | Entertainment

Later today, at 10:35pm, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit BBC One. This is the second solo movie for Chris Evans’ Marvel hero and began the end of SHIELD in the MCU. Steve Rogers’ worst moments came when he was attacked by his former crew in an elevator, led by a man who would later go on to become the supervillain Crossbones. To make this scene as perfect as possible, however, the actors were tasked with building a fight scene that was more intense than initially imagined.

Brock Rumlow was played by Frank Grillo in the film, before reprising his role in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.

While speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Grillo looked back on The Winter Soldier’s most iconic fight scene: The one which took place in the glass elevator at SHIELD HQ. He looked back: “Yeah we did a lot of training and then, on the day, I realised it was necessary for us to hit each other for real.” The American actor blamed the elevator being “so tight,” meaning their action sequence had to be ramped up.

The brutal fight scene ended up forcing them to step things up even further and almost go too far. By the end of the seven-day shoot, Grillo revealed both he and Captain America actor Evans were a little worse for wear.

Grillo also praised the dedication Marvel had while bringing the film to life.

He said: “You’re there a long time even if you’re not in the movie a long time. Even when I just showed up for a minute in [Avengers] Endgame I was in Atlanta for two weeks! The thing about movies like that, even if you’re in it a little, it’s impactful. Because you know those movies are the most popular movies in the world.”

Grillo’s role in the Captain America franchise ended in Civil War after he was killed during battle against Wanda Maximoff. He returned for a cameo in Endgame, but has since fallen out of the franchise.

The next movie in the series, Captain America: New World Order, is due to hit cinemas in 2024, but has an entirely new actor taking on the role of America’s finest.

Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson is now the new-and-improved Captain America, after the Disney Plus series Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

However, at the moment, even he isn’t sure what’s going to happen in the movie.

He pointed out last year: “I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like: ‘Yo, man. Is this real?!’ [holds up a phone] I’m like: ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like: ‘Come to LA We wanna tell you what’s going on.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.” He added: “What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I get blown out of the sky.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier and all other Marvel films are available to watch on Disney Plus now.
