Céline Dion’s new ballads couldn’t save this rom-com – Love Again review | Films | Entertainment

If you haven’t had your fill of Eurovision, here’s a reminder of the singular talents of the contest’s 1988 winner.

Celine Dion, who won by a single point while representing Switzerland, plays matchmaker and hitmaker in this equally cheesy romantic comedy.

A remake of the brilliantly titled German film SMS Für Dich, it sees the Canadian power balladeer dispense words of wisdom to a wholly unconvincing music journalist. “Love takes courage — open yourself to the universe,” she tells wooden writer Rob Burns (Sam Heughan).

He’s supposed to be interviewing her for his newspaper but, in an unguarded moment, has confessed to stalking a grieving children’s book illustrator.

It’s been two years since Mira (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) watched her husband get run over on a New York street. To channel her heartbreak, she’s started sending texts to his old mobile number.

Weirdly, that number has been reassigned to Burns’ work phone. After receiving texts like “I’m on the bed where you should be sleeping beside me”, the lad has become obsessed.

After tracking the sender down on social media, he engineers a meeting at an opera house.

The couple start dating and quickly fall in love but should he ’fess up to being a romantic fool/dangerous creep?

Thankfully, Celine is the world’s greatest expert on affairs of the heart.

Sadly, I’m not sure her five new ballads power over this rom-com’s sizable plot holes.
