Deadpool and Wolverine smashes Spider-Man No Way Home all-time record | Films | Entertainment

It’s no secret that Marvel Studios has been struggling to retain its blockbuster appeal and quality since Avengers Endgame.

To be fair, just how do you follow what was for a time the most successful movie ever made, after building up to it for a decade?

Yet as the MCU muddles through the Multiverse Saga and reassembles, there has been one movie to break the trend and it looks like another is about to do the same.

Just over two years ago, Spider-Man No Way Home had Endgame levels of hype, with rumours abounding of non-MCU villains and even former Peter Parkers appearing via the multiverse.

Lo and behold it came to pass, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s web slinger’s teaming up with Tom Holland’s Spidey. And boy did the box office not fail to disappoint.

Alongside glowing reviews, Spider-Man No Way Home made over $1.9 billion globally and became the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time. And it all began when the first teaser trailer broke the all-time record for most views in 24 hours at 355.5 million.

Incredibly this has now been beaten by Deadpool 3, which debuted its first look at the Super Bowl with a record-breaking 365 million views in its first day. Deadpool and Wolverine looks set to be for Fox Marvel characters what No Way Home was for Sony, bringing Hugh Jackman and other X-Men stars into the MCU via the multiverse.

The hype is hardly surprising given the Marvel legacy nostalgia, especially with the return of Jackman’s Wolverine – all combined with the popularity of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. This is a team-up fans have been dreaming of for years, just like the Spider-Man trio in No Way Home.

Marvel Studios has shifted all other MCU movies set for this year to 2025, except for Deadpool and Wolverine as clearly they’re confident that they’ve got a hit on their hands; one that’s once again rumoured to have plenty of cameos. And given the new trailer record, we’d be very surprised if Deadpool 3 didn’t make at least $2 billion at the box office this summer. Seriously.

Deadpool and Wolverine hits UK cinemas on July 25, 2024.
