A delivery driver was left completely incensed after a customer tipped him 10 percent on a £90 food order.
Writing on Reddit, the anonymous customer said he ordered a meal from a high-end restaurant via the DoorDash app.
He said: “The restaurant is about 1.5 miles from my house, which is about a 10-minute drive if you hit all the reds. The order was for me and my wife, and it consisted of two entrees and an appetizer.
“When it was all said and done, the entire meal, including taxes and fees, was $115.”
“I chose the option for a handoff, left no tip, opting instead to write in the note section, ‘Cash tip upon handoff.’ Though I don’t use DoorDash often at all, I figured it’d be a good way to assure that the meal was delivered straight to me, being that it was from a higher-end restaurant.”
When the driver arrived and handed over the food he tipped in cash – but he was shocked by the driver’s response.
He continued: “He looked at the $10 bill and scoffed. I asked if there was a problem.
“He said something to the effect of, ‘$10 on a $100 order? That’s f***ed.’”
The recipient decided to defend himself, telling the driver he only “delivered this one bag from a restaurant that’s a 10-minute drive from here.”
He said that because, unlike in the restaurant, he didn’t receive any service, he didn’t need to tip any higher.
But despite his explanation, the delivery driver was still less than impressed with his $10 tip.
The Reddit user continued: “He ended up walking away saying some other things and I closed the door and tried to move on with our evening.”
Asking for advice on the popular forum site, he said: “I don’t think that I was off in my tipping. If we had gone to the restaurant, I would have tipped our server at least 20 per cent.
“But this dasher just picked up the order and delivered it to our place. I don’t think that the job is the same, therefore, the tipping percentage isn’t the same. It’s put me off from using DoorDash again.
“I think from now on, I’ll be making the drive myself to pick up orders.”
The community seemed to agree with him, saying the tip he gave was actually generous, contrary to the driver’s opinion.
One user said: “$10 for 1.5 miles is a decent tip for a DoorDash driver. I’d take that run all day everyday. Your driver was rude.”
Another user added: “$10 is absolutely good. A regular, decent dasher will try to do $1-$2 per mile/trip length. So $1 for a minute of driving to you (50 cents for minute there and back) is very generous. Dasher was a jerk.”
A third user said: “I’d take $10 1.5 mile trips all day and be completely happy. He should have thanked you profusely.”
One more user, who claimed to be a DoorDash driver, added: “That was a good tip. Keep on that, we normal Dashers thank you.”
