In recent years Disney have been the box office kings with billion-dollar successes for the blockbuster likes of Marvel, Star Wars and live-action remakes of animated classics.
However, the Mouse House is facing almost $1 billion worth of losses after a catastrophic summer at the box office.
The worst of these is Harrison Ford’s return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The 80-year-old’s swansong arrived 15 years after the last lacklustre adventure Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with an eyewatering budget of over $300 million at Lucasfilm.
Tragically, the new blockbuster – which received lukewarm reviews – has so far made only $356.8 million at the box office which means the film won’t break even after the millions spent on marketing the flop.
Considering the hundreds of millions lost on Indiana Jones 5, Ford’s final outing as the adventurer is set to go down as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. To make matters worse, Disney have suffered a disastrous opening for Haunted Mansion. Based on a Disneyland theme park ride like Pirates of the Caribbean, this reboot of the Eddie Murphy original made only $33 million in its opening weekend on a budget of $150 million.
Meanwhile, The Littler Mermaid live-action remake has been a disappointment having made just over $56 million on a budget of $250 million. According to Screen Rant, the rule of thumb to break even in Hollywood means you have to make around 2.5 times the budget when marketing and distribution are taken into consideration. Unlike the billion-dollar successes of other reimagined animated musicals like The Lion King and Aladdin, this outing will lose millions.
Next up is Pixar’s Elemental, which had the worst opening for the CG animation studio in 28 years, with only $29.5 million made on its $200 million. Nevertheless, the film has made over $395 million, but this probably isn’t enough for it to be profitable.
As it stands, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is Disney’s only real box office success this summer having made $844.9 million worldwide on a budget of $250 million. All in all, Screen Rant estimate Disney could lose almost $1 billion at around $900 million in total losses.
