Elvis Presley gathered at Graceland today to pay tribute to The King on what would have been his 89th birthday.
Wink Martindale, who was there the night that the star’s first commercial record of That’s All Right was played on WHBQ radio, made this year’s birthday proclamation for his late friend.
And that was just before Graceland announced that they had acquired Elvis’ original acetate of the single that launched his career when it was first played by Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips.
Recorded in 1954, the acetate is set to go on display at the Memphis mansion.
And to prove it was the real deal, it was played on a record player in front of The King’s birthday cake for fans.
If that wasn’t enough, Graceland has released a special video where you can listen to the recording too.
The accompanying Instagram post read: “Elvis Presley’s Graceland announced today the acquisition of the original acetate disc of Elvis’ recording of That’s All Right, which was first played by Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips on WHBQ, marking the pivotal moment that ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture that changed the world forever. The acetate is now on display at Graceland!”
