A recent survey conducted by Pew Research reveals that a large majority of Americans are skeptical of President Biden’s self-professed devout Catholic identity.
According to the poll, only 13% of respondents view Biden as “very religious,” with 41% considering him “somewhat religious,” and 44% believing he is “not at all” or “not too religious.”
The findings are in stark contrast to Biden’s own claims of being a devout Catholic who regularly attends church. The White House has also defended Biden’s pro-choice stance on abortion by highlighting his faith.
Biden’s relationship with the Catholic Church has been strained, with Pope Francis criticizing his abortion views in 2021, calling them “incoherent.”
In a subsequent meeting, Biden claimed that Francis encouraged him to continue receiving Communion despite their differences.
Former President Trump has seized on the discord between Biden’s faith and his abortion stance, suggesting that Catholics should not support him.
While Trump has made nods to Protestant and Catholic voters, he has not portrayed himself as a devoutly religious individual, aligning with the perceptions of most Americans as indicated by the poll.
Only 4% of respondents believe Trump is “very religious,” with 25% labeling him as “somewhat religious.” The majority, 68%, view Trump as “not too religious” or “not at all religious.”
