Glastonbury stars joined by Hollywood director in Cate Blanchett dance | Music | Entertainment

Sparks hit the Glastonbury Festival stage in Worthy Farm last night and kicked off their setlist with an incredible surprise.

Singer Russell Mael told his audience: “Hopefully as many of you know we have a brand new album, it just came out a couple of weeks ago. We have a super special treat tonight.

“We did a video for this song recently and we had the great honour of having the great actor Cate Blanchett join us – where are you Cate Blanchett?”

The Australian actress hit the stage in the same yellow suit, green sunglasses and red headphones she donned in the band’s music video for The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte.

She then danced and performed throughout the song, but the surprises didn’t stop there.

Eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that at the end of the performance, Cate huddled up with Sparks to get a photo taken.

But the person behind the lens was none other than Hollywood director Edgar Wright.

The British filmmaker is best known for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and Baby Driver.

In fact, Wright and Blanchett have a strong connection behind the camera.

The Oscar-winner apparently adored Shaun of the Dead and got in touch with Wright to tell him as much.

After that, Blanchett had an uncredited cameo in the star’s follow-up movie, Hot Fuzz. Many fans didn’t even realise it was the Lord of the Rings star at the time, as she was playing a forensic scientist who was wearing overalls and a mask.

At the time, Wright laughed: “Let’s get an Oscar winner in there but not see her face.”

Sparks previously spoke about meeting the actress for the first time as well. The band said: “We met Cate Blanchett in Paris at the Cesar Awards last year.

“Little knowing that a year later one of the great actors of our time – and a splendid person – would graciously consent to lending her booty-shaking skills to the first video from our new album.”
