Henry Cavill fans devastated as Superman star fired by DC after returning just weeks ago | Films | Entertainment

Henry Cavill Superman fans have been waiting years in hope that Warner Bros would bring back his Man of Steel. Incredibly, Dwayne Johnson actually managed to negotiate a return, which send audiences wild when they saw him in the end credits scene of Black Adam this past October. Following the blockbuster’s release, the Clark Kent actor himself took to social media to confirm his long-awaited comeback saying: “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded.” But now such dreams have been totally and utterly crushed.

Warner Bros has been having a shake-up at DC, with Marvel director James Gunn and Peter Safran being hired to head up the newly rebranded DC Studios and its DCU. And it wasn’t long before The Hollywood Reporter shared that the pair were planning a new narrative structure for the franchise, one that would be stepping away from the Zack Snyder Justice League characters.

As a result, Wonder Woman 3 has been cancelled, Black Adam 2 probably won’t happen, nor a rumoured Man of Steel 2. The outlet admitted the Cavill situation is “more than a little thorny”, especially after his appearance in Black Adam and the fact he’s filmed a Superman cameo in next year’s The Flash.

Since then, Gunn has dispelled rumours on Twitter that he doesn’t like Cavill’s Man of Steel and confirmed he has big plans for Kal-El in the DC franchise going forward. However, it turns out those plans don’t include the original actor who was only brought back less than two months ago.

Fans’ worst fears came to pass as Cavill took to social media to share the tragic news that his Superman will now not in fact be coming back to the DC franchise at all.

The 39-year-old wrote on Instagram: “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

The Man of Steel star then went on to thank his fans for being by his side for all these years.

HENRY CAVILL’S ORIGINAL SUPERMAN RETURN ANNOUNCEMENT: Henry Cavill fans ‘in tears’ over latest Superman news and ‘promise’

Cavill continued: “For those who have been by my side through the years….. we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Aquaman and Shazam stars Jason Momoa and Zachary Levi commented on the post, “Love you brother” and “Hope to catch you in another universe, sir”. Distraught fans joined the mourning in the comment section, with one saying, “Whhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttt? And the Black Adam scene?! Damn… so sad”, another lamenting, “Wow. Unbelievable. DC is in shambles” and one saying “Saddened by this. You embodied the character on and off screen. Very much looking forward to everything you do and excited to see the other characters you’ll bring to life in the future. Hugs.”

In the wake of the news, Gunn’s Superman reboot, one that won’t be an origin story, has been announced.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new Superman movie will star a new and younger Man of Steel actor. At this stage, Gunn is writing the script but could end up directing the blockbuster too.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 director wrote on Twitter: “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

By the sounds of it, Cavill could end up playing a different DC character in Gunn’s new universe. But in the meantime, there are reports the actor has signed on for Avatar 4 and let’s not forget that he’s a bookies’ favourite in the running to be the next James Bond too.
