Hey there! Friendly reminder: as cool as it sounds, you can’t actually eat a Michelin star meal in space. Space Perspective’s capsule won’t reach space. Just a heads up! 🚀

Space tourism is introducing a new level of luxury travel, offering expensive meals and designer flight suits against the backdrop of Earth’s curvature. However, it’s crucial to note that while a Florida-based startup is providing passengers with the opportunity to enjoy a Michelin-starred meal in space aboard its balloon-propelled capsule, the capsule does not actually reach space.

Space Perspective recently announced a collaboration with two-Michelin Star restaurant Alchemist to host the meal on its Spaceship Neptune. The capsule will be lifted into the stratosphere attached to a SpaceBalloon, taking passengers on a six-hour journey. Each ticket costs $495,000.

The giant hydrogen-propelled balloon rises at a leisurely speed of 12 miles per hour, reaching an altitude of 20 miles. However, it falls short of the internationally recognized boundary of space, the Karman line, which begins at 62 miles above Earth.

Experts established the Karman line as the point where orbital dynamic forces surpass aerodynamic forces, signifying the boundary where Earth’s atmosphere can no longer support a flying vehicle. Despite the distinction made by Space Perspective that its capsule only reaches the edge of space, coverage of the Michelin-starred meal has inaccurately portrayed it as a journey to space.

Mistakes in describing space tourism are not uncommon, as seen with Virgin Galactic’s Unity spaceplane, which reaches a maximum altitude of 54.2 miles, closer to space but still not in actual space.

Passengers aboard Space Perspective’s Neptune will enjoy custom-made outfits by French fashion house Ogier and have access to a private bathroom with large windows. The pressurized capsule allows for passengers to move around, providing a different experience than that of astronauts on the International Space Station. Despite not reaching space, the edge of space still offers breathtaking views and a unique journey for those aboard.
