In the last few years, retail has taken a real hit due to several factors. The pandemic had a huge impact on the high street as shopping habits changed and people started doing more of their purchasing online.
Now, the cost of living crisis threatens the high street, as spending habits change again.
Back in August, Retail Gazette reported: “According to the British Retail Consortium, 6,000 shops have closed down in the UK in the last five years as a result of crippling business rates, a wave of administrations during the pandemic, and hesitancy around new openings.”
Homebase is just one retailer that has announced upcoming store closures. The home improvement and garden centre company will be shutting the doors of three stores for good, according to Time Out.

- Marsh Mills Retail Park, Plymouth (November)
- Southam Road, Banbury (November)
- Finchley Road, London (December 10)
In a statement to PlymouthLive, Homebase said: “We’ll be closing our Plymouth Marsh Mills store in November, an exact date is yet to be confirmed.” Express.co.uk has contacted Homebase for comment.
According to Retail Gazette, House of Fraser, Boots, M&S, Argos, LLoyds Pharmacy, Iceland, New Look, H&M, Superdry and Amazon have been affected by store closures.
Popular supermarket Iceland will close two stores this month, Trinity Street in Huddersfield and Fulford Road, York on October 28.
However, Søstrene Greene, Mango, Lounge Underwear, Sephora, Screwfix, Pets Corner, Greggs, Moss and The Fragrance Shop will see new store openings.
