There are many DIY solutions out there that claim to minimise hair loss and encourage hair growth.
From rice water to rosemary oil and coconut oil, there are plenty of unusual items people can try on their scalps to help with common problems such as hair loss.
One natural hair remedy that some experts claim helps promote hair growth by boosting blood supply to the scalp is onion juice.
Onions contain lots of sulphur compounds and flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal, properties.
While sulphur can be found in lots of foods like eggs and meats, by putting onion juice on your scalp, you could be improving blood circulation.
Hairstylist Brooke Shaw from San Francisco said keratin, which is a protein in hair, contains sulphur.
She also said onions have “antibacterial properties” which means they can help “fight scalp infections that cause hair loss”.
Hairdresser Essie Button told Vegamour that when onion juice is applied to the hair and scalp it is treating bacteria while also “boosting blood supply to your scalp and hair follicles” which makes it easier for hair to grow.
Kerry Yates, a trichologist and founder of Colour Collective, agreed that onions are packed with antioxidants and flavonoids which means they have anti-inflammatory benefits.
As well as potentially helping with hair growth, onion juice could help get rid of fungal infections that cause dandruff, according to Everyday Health.
Dandruff is a common condition that causes the skin on the scalp to flake off.
Compared to other treatments, there hasn’t been as much research to show how beneficial onion juice is for hair.
However, a study published in 2014 suggested that onion water could help with hair regrowth among those with alopecia areata which causes hair loss.
Onion juice should not be used by those who are allergic to onions.
After using onion juice, you should make sure your hair has been thoroughly washed out to prevent irritation.
To make onion water, peel and chop three to four onions and extract the juice by squeezing or blending them.
Apply the juice to your head using a cotton pad, making sure to massage it into the scalp.
Allow the solution to sit on your scalp for an hour and then rinse it out. Wash with shampoo afterwards to remove the smell.
