‘I took my neighbour’s child on holiday without telling her – it is my biggest mistake’

A former babysitter has shared how she took her neighbour’s two-year-old boy on holiday for over a week and didn’t inform the parents.

The woman, who goes by @seenasyouasked on TikTok told her story in a video that has gained millions of views and gone viral after people were left shocked and curious by what happened.

The woman explained that her story takes place in 1991 and that she used to frequently babysit her next-door neighbour’s son. She explained: “I was 20 and newly married. I lived next door to a family with a toddler. He was two. I used to look after him and sometimes babysit for a couple of hours to help his mum out.”

One say, the little boy’s mother came over to ask if the woman if she could babysit. The woman recalled the mother asking: “Could you look after my son, and would you mind having him overnight because I’m going to go away for the evening?”

However, the woman explained she was going on holiday the very next morning, to which the mother replied that it was fine. Both women “did not communicate properly”, and so the babysitter assumed the mother wanted her to take the little boy with her on holiday.

The woman said: “Monday comes along and she drops off this sweet little boy – he’s really lovely, he stayed overnight.

“Early Tuesday morning, we all packed up the car, I popped him in his car seat, we drove off to London – we lived in Birmingham – stayed in a hotel, I got the hotel to give us a little cot.

“He was so lovely, I got him food and bought some extra nappies as she hadn’t sent enough nappies for the week and I just went through the week with this little lad.”

The woman explained that her husband worked in London, so she would keep her toddler occupied with many family-friendly activities. She said: “During the day, I took him to the zoo and walked around Hyde Park – we had a blast! He loved it, he slept really well, didn’t cry at night, and everything was great.”

Due to it being the early 1990s, the woman also did not have a mobile phone and did not even know her neighbour’s phone number as they lived next door to each other.

The babysitter said: “So I bought postcards, and every day I wrote a postcard, posted it to her address, just so she’d know everything was OK and the kid was fine.”

Once the week was over and the holiday had come to an end, the woman and her husband travelled back home to Birmingham and greeted the mother while a smile.

However, the mother told the babysitter: “So lovely of you – really wonderful. I do have to say something though… When I said ‘that’s fine’, I meant I’ll come back Tuesday morning and go get him. I didn’t actually mean for you to take him on holiday the whole week.”

The woman was shocked and said she apologised profusely. She said: “Thank God I sent the postcards! … I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry! I can’t believe I took your kid.”

While most people would expect the mother to be intensely worried in this situation, the babysitter revealed that the mother was not fussed. The mother replied: “No, I had a great time, I had a lovely break for the week!”

In the TikTok comment section, people were in disbelief that such an incident had taken place, and many found the mother’s reaction highly amusing. One user joked: “True definition of a 90s parent like ‘ah she took him on vacation, all righty then.’”

Another person wrote: “I really thought you were going to say she reported you for kidnapping! So glad she was okay with it!” Someone else wrote: “This is what we’ve been trying to say about 90s parents and you all don’t believe us.”

However, some commentators thought it was lovely that the babysitter was happy to take a neighbour’s child on holiday without any fuss. One user wrote: “How sweet is it of you to just take their kid with you on YOUR Vacation. I have good friends but sheesh. I need friends like you!”
