Iceland to lose another store with more to go this month

Frozen goods retailer Iceland will scrap another one of its brick-and-mortar sites this weekend following a string of closures this year. 

The supermarket giant has already axed 13 shops this year in a bid to adjust to “local shopping patterns” across the UK.

Three stores are expected to disappear from high streets this month alone, with the first to go tomorrow, Saturday, September 2.

Iceland customers in Llanelli, Wales, will bid farewell to the town centre site for good, with no plans to replace it.

It’s not all bad news though as shoppers can head to the Food Warehouse site nearby at Parc Pemberton Retail Park for all their frozen goods.

Two more sites will follow suit and pull the shutters down later this month on Saturday, September 16.

The Iceland store at Grange Road, Birkenhead, currently operates a three-windows-wide building on the high street but will close for good in two weeks.

Customers local to the Market Shopping Centre branch in Crewe will also have to find an alternative from September 16.

While the closures will see a reduction in standalone Iceland stores across the UK, the retailer announced that it will also replace a handful of them this year.

Three new stores have already joined the supermarket’s brick-and-mortar portfolio in the past three months, two of which are in England.

A new Iceland store in Kendal, Cumbria, opened in July 2023, just one month after a branch debuted on Slough High Street.
