Fans are just a few short months away from seeing Indiana Jones 5 on the big screen – and this week some new details have been released. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is destined to bring Harrison Ford’s journey as the iconic archaeologist to a resounding close – but this time around, fans will have a far longer experience in cinemas than ever before.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy looks after such properties as Indiana Jones and Star Wars. And at the recent Star Wars Celebration (which was held in London) Kennedy was quizzed about Indiana Jones 5’s runtime, where she revealed: “So, it’s around 2 hours, 22 [or] 23 minutes.”
This massive chunk of time makes The Dial of Destiny the longest Indiana Jones movie to date. Prior to this, the third movie in the series – 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – was the longest film in the franchise, coming in at 2 hours, 8 minutes.
Although this is a massive jump in time for the series, Kennedy went on to assure her fans and the devout Indiana Jones followers that they shouldn’t be worried about The Dial of Destiny.
Kennedy told Collider: “Because runtime seems to be a hot topic, then I will say, the early movies were shorter – they were under 2 [hours], 15 [minutes] – and we talked about that quite a bit. So, now I see why maybe they [the fans] are interested in this.
“But, as you know with runtime, it’s all about how you feel, right? So if you’re sitting in a movie and it feels long, you’re like, ‘Ugh…'”
Kennedy followed up by adding that fans are not “dealing with a long movie” that will leave cinemagoers frustrated or bored. She also suggested that viewers are more receptive to “long-form storytelling on streaming” so a bigger movie is more likely to be accepted.
With that said, it is perhaps pertinent to point out that the shortest Indiana Jones movie is currently the highest-rated.
The first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, has a relatively short runtime of 1 hour, 55 minutes.
The 1981 movie currently has the highest rating of all Indiana Jones properties on Rotten Tomatoes, with a staggering 96 percent approval rating from critics and audience members.
Although the new movie is long, Ford was keen to make a lot of cuts to it when he first saw the script.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained how he “hated” some of the new movie.
In particular, Ford wanted to cut out a lot of jokes about being old.
“We took them all out,” he said. “There is a moment where he observes himself in this situation and says: ‘What the f**k am I doing in here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about the story.’”
He went on to add: “I want to see circumstances in which the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the nose with highlights pointed out to them. I’d rather create behaviour that is the joke of age rather than talk about it.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits cinemas on June 30.
