It’s been four years since Iron Man died in Avengers Endgame, sacrificially giving his own life to defeat Thanos.
Since then fans have been wondering if Robert Downey Jr would ever return to the MCU as Tony Stark.
After all, he very easily can do what with all the time travel and multiverse variants involved in the Marvel franchise’s storytelling nowadays.
There have even been rumours that he will return in Avengers: Secret Wars, the current Multiverse Saga’s big climatic Endgame set to debut in 2027.
However, he could be back much sooner than expected as the star has been spotted on the set of Captain America: Brave New World, which is released in cinemas next year.
Nawar Shora wrote on LinkedIn: “They are filming Captain America 4 around the White House and near my office.
“I was on a quick errand walk as I noticed all the lights and equipment and finally asked one of the security folks about it. He was so talkative and nice, said — (SPOILER) — Robert Downey Jr was there last night and they were driving all sorts of super cars. We had a good talk and some laughs.
“I kept hoping for some producer to walk up to me and demand: ‘You! … You have to play my next superhero!’”
Of course, it may be that Downey Jr was simply visiting the MCU set, but it’s always possible he could have a cameo in a flashback. Or maybe there’s some time travel and multiverse shenanigans involved?
Captain America 4 stars Anthony Mackie as the new Cap, Sam Wilson in a mystery plot that’s also bringing back characters from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
These include Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns aka Leader and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross.
Meanwhile, Harrison Ford is the recast Thunderbolt Ross, following the death of original actor William Hurt. It’s heavily speculated that the character, who is now the President of the United States, will turn into Red Hulk during the movie.
Captain America: Brave New World hits cinemas on July 26, 2024.
