Jesus star ‘on the floor crying’ over Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ 2 plans | Films | Entertainment

When The Passion of the Christ first hit cinemas 19 years ago, the controversial and bloody retelling of Jesus’ final hours was a massive hit making over $622 million worldwide.

Since then, director Mel Gibson and his titular star Jim Caviezel have been planning a sequel focused on the Resurrection and its aftermath complete with scenes in other realms with angels.

The filmmaker himself has confirmed he’s considering a couple of scripts at the moment with one that’s described as a “crazy acid trip”.

Production on Passion of the Christ 2 Resurrection, which may be spread across two or three movies, continues to be pushed back but the pair are determined that the blockbusters will happen.

Caviezel, who has been promoting his new movie Sound of Freedom, a US box office hit about the true story of rescuing sex-trafficked children, has shared an update on what will likely be the first sequel.

Speaking on the Shawn Ryan Show, Caviezel said: “I asked him [Gibson] would you be ready to go in January, he said ‘Yeah, maybe.’

“I said ‘How about the end of Fall,’ he said ‘Yeah, maybe.’ So who knows… He’s been on this for a long, long time.

“It will be the biggest film in history. It might be two films, maybe three, but I think it’s two.”

What Caviezel has seen of the script so far has totally blown him away.

Speaking on Devin Nunes Unplugged, the 54-year-old actor said: “Mel [Gibson] took me through all of the scenes and I was on the floor crying […] it’ll be one of the best things you’ve ever seen.

He joked: “I can’t tell you [when it’s coming out]. If I told you I’d have to kill you.”
