Johnny Depp in tears after overwhelming career resurrection in Cannes | Films | Entertainment

Johnny Depp triumphantly told the world’s press that he doesn’t have “much further need” for Hollywood.

Asked about his apparent exile from the US film industry he said: “Do I feel a boycott now? No, not at all. I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don’t think about Hollywood.”

The actor was in tears after a seven-minute-long standing ovation for his new movie Jeanne du Barry.

He speaks fluent French in the role on one of France’s most famous monarch’s, alongside French star Maiwenn.

Depp stars in the 18th-century romance Jeanne du Barry as King Louis XV opposite Maïwenn’s titular courtesan.

Far away from his Hollywood critics, Jeanne du Barry is a French-language movie that also gives the American star the opportunity to show off his command of the language. Depp has lived on and off for many years in France. He was married to Vanessa Paradis from 1998-2012 and French is their daughter Lily-Rose’s maiden tongue.

No doubt, many of his fans will also delight in the fact that Louis reigned over France from 1715-1774, rough the same time period as the setting of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

As well as starring in the new movie, Maiwenn also wrote, directed and produced the lavish historical epic. After Depp lost his libel trail against The Sun in 2019, he feared he would be dropped from Jeanne du Barry but Maiwenn insisted the film would not be made without him.

The support for Depp in the French film industry is a stark contrast from his current profile in Hollywood.

Following his acrimonious split from Amber Heard and the various defamation trials and accusations of abuse on both sides, the actor found himself cut loose by Disney and Warner Bros from The Pirates of The Carribbean and the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them franchises.
