Kate, Princess of Wales may have never met her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, but the two are closely linked by their path into the Royal Family and of course, Prince William.
Since stepping into the role of Diana, Kate is in some ways closer than ever to her, and according to fashion stylist Miranda Holder, it’s clear to see in her choice of clothing.
Of course, royal protocol is responsible for many of the similarities in Kate and Diana’s wardrobes, but the current Princess of Wales is clearly influenced by her late mother-in-law’s iconic style legacy.
The 41-year-old’s recent appearance at Trooping the Colour was a prime example of this when she paid a sweet tribute to both Diana and Queen Elizabeth II in a bespoke green dress by designer Andrew Gn.
In a video posted on her TikTok account, (@themirandaholder), Miranda said: “The first thing I thought when I saw this look was Princess Diana. I know it’s an obvious reference, Princess Diana has worn a lot of green before.

“But the coat dress, with its oversized buttons, exaggerated tailoring and extra-wide hat brim just had the 1980s Princess Diana’s heyday, written all over it.
“This reference was furthered of course by those beautiful diamond and sapphire earrings which did of course belong once to the late Princess Diana herself.”
One of Diana’s green outfits that particularly stood out was the jacket and skirt co-ord worn on November 4, 1992, while visiting The British School In Seoul, Korea.
In 1988, Diana stood in the same spot as Kate on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the military occasion, wearing a white and green outfit.
The wide-brim Philip Somerville hat was a close match to the one worn by the Princess of Wales just last weekend, who was clearly inspired by Diana’s 80s-style accessories.
Describing Kate’s Trooping the Colour look, Miranda pointed out that the “80s structure, bold lines and dramatic colour” stood out as Diana-esque features.
She added that the colour clash of the “exaggerated” blue buttons was another vintage trend often styled by the late Princess.
In true royal style, the attention to detail on Kate’s outfit was incredibly refined – with a matching button on the back of the wide-brim hat to match her dress.
The style expert claimed that the green ensemble was very much a “power dressing move” from the Princess of Wales, suggesting that it could be a nod to a spout of “bolder” looks to come from Kate.
Miranda added: “However, this phenomenal look, I believe, was also a reference to her late majesty the Queen, who wore pretty much exactly the same shade of green, and let’s face it, quite a similar outfit, to her last Trooping of the Colour during the Platinum Jubilee.”
While the sweet sentiment of Kate’s outfit was perhaps the most poignant, her choice of green was also a tribute to her honorary role as Colonel of the Irish Guards.
The gold Cartier Shamrock brooch pinned on her left lapel was “worn with pride”, according to the fashion expert, who pointed out that it was very appropriate for the military occasion.
