Margot Robbie’s ‘patriarchy condemning’ Barbie movie unsuitable for young kids | Films | Entertainment

Barbie may be a doll that little girls have played with for over 60 years, but her live-action debut has not been deemed appropriate for young kids by the BBFC.

Margot Robbie’s upcoming movie sees “Barbie and Ken leave Barbieland and venture to California where they encounter the realities of being human in this lighthearted US comedy.

“It explores themes of gender roles and patriarchy through a satirical lens.”

The Greta Gerwig-directed film has been given a 12A rating which means the content is only suitable for children aged 12 or over.

However, kids younger can see it as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The BBFC has given Barbie this certification because of “moderate innuendo, brief sexual harassment, implied strong language.”

On sexual themes, the BBFC said of Barbie: “Moderate innuendo includes occasional gags about ‘beaching off’ and ‘sugar daddies’. There is a scene of sexual harassment in which men catcall a woman and make inappropriate comments about her appearance.

“A man slaps a woman’s bottom, however, his behaviour is immediately challenged and results in negative consequences.”

On language in Barbie, the BBFC wrote: “There is a use of bleeped strong language (‘motherf**ker’), as well as moderate bad language (‘bitch’) and milder terms such as ‘crap’, ‘God’, ‘hell’ and ‘damn’.”

And on the film’s themes added: “There are occasional verbal references to death and mental health. Occasional references are made to patriarchal attitudes about women’s roles in society. These attitudes are clearly condemned and satirised.”

Barbie hits UK cinemas on July 21, 2023.
