Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are two stylish women who inspired millions with their wardrobe choices, but it seems the Duchess of Sussex uses a clever trick to emulate her sister-in-law the Princess of Wales.
Hallie Abrams is a personal stylist and founder of The Wardrobe Consultant. She discussed Meghan Markle’s style with Express and claimed she uses a common style trick that emulates Kate Middleton’s figure.
The Duchess of Sussex has used the trick at a number of events, including during her final visit to the UK as a working royal and even on her wedding day.
It is a method many stylists use to make their clients look more statuesque, and Hallie explained: “Meghan’s a little smaller in terms of her stature than Kate. She’s shorter and her shoulders are narrower.”
“So, she’s employing these great tools, which is using clothing to create an optical illusion.”
Meghan opts for clothes that crate width across the shoulders, Hallie explained. She said: “So for Meghan, even with her wedding dress, she had that boat neck that’s creating width at the top.”
Similarly, Meghan wore a stunning red dress from Safiyaa to The Mountbatten Festival of Music in March 2020.
Hallie explained: “This red dress, it’s creating width up here because it has that mock neck and the cape. She’s trying to visually create the silhouette that Kate naturally has.”
Meghan has deployed this trick, using clothes to add width to her shoulders, often. At the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple Of Hope Gala in December last year she wore a white off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton gown, drawing attention to the vertical line of her shoulders.
Again, while at the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, Meghan wore a cape dress, creating the illusion of width at the shoulders.
Meghan is far from the only person to deploy this style trick. Stylists often employ the technique on pear and apple-shaped bodies to make the waist look slimmer.
Another fashion expert highlighted another clever technique Meghan uses to draw attention to her slim figure, no matter what she’s wearing.
Fashion stylist Miranda Holder pointed out Meghan often wears cropped trousers and rolled-up jacket sleeves.
Meghan wore such a look to eat at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood, a vegan Mexican restaurant. She wore a Max Mara cashmere coat worth $5,990,00 (£4,902,76) and Valentino glasses worth $192 (£157.56).
She said: “This little hack is super clever because it exposes the slimmest part of her, her wrists and ankles. Highlighting her slender figure no matter how many layers she’s wearing.”
