Mum sparks debate with Mother’s Day wish to have ‘break’ from family | US | News

A mum has sparked a debate on the internet after admitting the one thing she really wanted on Mother’s Day was to be left alone by her family.

Writing for nine.com in Australia, Heidi Krause said she didn’t like Mother’s Day and questioned why mums needed “some specified date where we are dutifully appreciated” with expensive gifts.

She later admitted: “If you ask me what I really want for Mother’s Day? Honestly, I want a break from my family and some ‘me time’.”

Ms Krause was quick to add that she still loved her boys “with all my heart”, yet said being a mum could still be “exhausting.”

The mum said her idea of a perfect Mother’s Day was “a night in a hotel by myself” or a refreshing weekend away with her “closest girlfriends.”

She added: “My apologies if I’m offending anyone or sounding ungrateful. I know a time will come when I miss the fact I can’t sleep in or go the toilet in peace.”

Ms Krause’s story sparked a bit of debate on social media – but several readers took her side and admitted they also disliked Mother’s Day.

One reader said: “Agreed would love alone time.” Another replied: “This is what most mothers want, just a break and time to themselves.”

A third added: “Kids don’t cook, make me breakfast [or] coffee… [they] expect me to do everything so Mother’s Day is nothing to me anymore.”

But not all readers saw completely eye-to-eye with Krause and her wish for a peaceful, family-free Mother’s Day.

Commenter Cathy Short De Vreede said: “I used to say that.. don’t worry before you know it you will have plenty alone. Enjoy it time passes too quickly. Just stay in a hotel for a couple of weeks and go to dinner with a friend.”

Mother’s Day passed on March 10 in the UK – some two months ago. But in the United States and Australia, families celebrate Mother’s Day on May 14.

Mother’s Day, also known as Mothering Sunday, is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK as part of a traditional religious celebration.

In the US, Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May – a custom shared by Germany and Greece.
