Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced he is separating from his wife Sophie after 18 years of marriage. The politician is famed for his charming interactions with some of the world’s most high-profile women.
The internet has joked Trudeau looks like a ‘Disney Prince’ and many pictures and tweets of famous women seemingly being charmed by Trudeau have often gone viral on social media.
One popular tweet said: “Get you someone that looks at you the way Ivanka Trump looks at Justin Trudeau” while another tweet said “No one is safe from Prime Minister ‘Steal Yo Girl!’ alongside pictures of royal Princess Kate and former political advisor Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former president Donald Trump, appearing to smile while looking at Trudeau.
Body language and communication expert Judi James has analysed certain interactions famous women have had with the Canadian Prime Minister, and if he is as charismatic as social media believes him to be.
Judi said: “Trudeau’s body language defines the word ‘charm’. His skills are so strong they’re almost tangible and, like the best non-sexual flirt signals, they are potent across the board. Everyone he meets seems susceptible to them, men and women.”
She added: “He seems to flatter in ways that get under and over the radar of the most hardened cynics and is clearly able to change the body language state and behavior of other people, creating playful response smiles that we’ve often never seen from them before.”
Judi analysed Trudeau’s interactions with former first lady Melania Trump and even looked into how Princess Kate and Queen Elizabeth behaved around Trudeau, but concluded that even men such as Prince William and former president Donald Trump seemed charmed by the Canadian Prime Minister.
She said: “We can see Melania gazing admiringly but then Trump also basked in the glow of the Trudeau charm when it was his turn to chat with him. Kate looked overwhelmed with coyness but then William also appeared a bit in awe when it was his turn for a one-to-one chat. The ‘victim’s’ body language responses tend to become collusive, as though they know they’re being charmed but are happy to enjoy the experience.
“It’s often easy to mistake ‘charm’ for ‘smarm’ and anyone laying it on too thickly can make others suspicious and wary but Trudeau seems to get the balance just right. His flattering attention signals are delivered with a pitch-perfect smile but his body language also exudes hints of self-effacing humor too, as though he doesn’t take himself too seriously and as though he feels he is the lucky one to be there in the meeting.”
Judi explained that Trudeau’s charm appeared to be his “relaxed confidence” and he is able to make eye contact look “flattering” while also completing his look with a “boyish smile.”
The body language expert analysed a photograph of the 2019 G7 summit in which Meliana Trump appeared to kiss the Canadian Prime Minister on the cheek during a photoshoot.
Judi said: “Melania Trump melted under his gaze, producing one of her warmest, most congruent smiles here (from a woman known for her ‘lightning’, flash or slightly forced smiles), and although she was just puckering for an innocent air kiss, the moment frozen in time by the cameras looked hilariously if misleadingly romantic as Trump stood in front, apparently unaware.”
Ivanka Trump has also famously been joked about falling for Trudeau’s charm during a roundtable discussion about women in the workforce, with many users online making jokes about Ivanka seemingly smitten with Trudeau in the photographs. Judi said: “Ivanka Trump seemed to have fallen under Trudeau’s spell too, apparently gazing at him in what looks like awe as he chatted to others at a meeting.”
Even the late Queen Elizabeth seemed immune to the Canadian Prime Minister’s charm, as Judi said that photographs appeared to show the monarch seeming “just a little more delighted” at meeting Trudeau than other politicians.
Judi explained: “The late Queen had perfected the art of unbiased body language responses and a consistent charm of her own but even she seemed to be just a little more delighted to be meeting Trudeau than she did other world leaders.
“The signals of affection between the two were always very intense, making Trudeau look more like family than a visiting politician. His eye-wrinkled smile here registers deep respect and affection and he has very comfortably grasped her hand in both of his own, while the Queen’s dazzling smile suggests she was delighted.”
Even Princess Kate’s reaction to meeting Trudeau was “hilariously coy” according to Judi, and the Princess appeared to be “almost like a teenager with a crush.” She said: “As Trudeau turns on the charm she dips her chin shyly but keeps eye contact and performs a hair-preen gesture while William looks away into the middle distance.”
Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who has met the Canadian Prime Minster several times through her humanitarian work, seemed charmed similarly charmed by Trudeau. Judi said: “Emily Watson performs a similar ‘teenage’ preen gesture here, pushing her sleeve up to create a small barrier while she performs what looks like a flattering overkill laugh that involves eye contact while Trudeau seems to be cracking a joke.”
