Queen Elizabeth II was known for her dramatic and dynamic style choices. Avoiding beige like the plague, she was mainly spotted in brightly coloured monochromatic ensembles.
The 5’4 Queen was able to command attention in bold coat dress and hat combos, from neon green to hot pink to canary yellow.
Princess Anne has her own very eclectic style. In her younger days she sported short skirts and trouser suits, and today she flits between dresses, colourful coats, casual wear, military uniform – and of course her Adidas sunnies.
There was one moment many years ago when the two very different royal style icons ended up matching at an event.
Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne bore an uncanny resemblance to each other in June 1988 when they attended the Epsom Derby.
Both royals stepped out in butter yellow dresses and matching hats. Despite the 24-year age difference, the pair looked like sisters.
Queen Elizabeth II wore a mid-length coat with very pronounced, structured shoulders. It fastened with buttons.
She accessoried with a hat in the same colour, featuring a dainty white decorative ribbon resembling flowers.
As for jewellery, she wore her three-strand pearl necklace, signature pearl studs and an extravagant pearl and diamond brooch. She carried a black patent handbag.
The Queen’s makeup was very minimal – barely there in fact – and her hair poked out from underneath her hat in tight ringlets.
Her daughter’s entire look was strikingly similar. Princess Anne wore a mid-length coat in the same shade, the only real differences in hers being a lack of shoulder pad and a brooch fastening rather than buttons.
Princess Anne too donned some white gloves but instead of a black handbag, she carried one in patent white, along with a brolly.
The Princess went for some relatively similar jewellery to her mum – some classic pearl studs and a white and pearl choker necklace.
Her hat did not boast a decorative white ribbon but underneath peaked a multi-coloured headband with pops of pink and yellow. Underneath the coat she wore a dress with the same pattern.
