Queen Elizabeth II stopped wearing a ‘cold colour’ to royal weddings after 1986

When the late Queen attended the first weddings of her eldest three children, she always wore the same colour – blue. In 1973, when Princess Anne walked down the aisle to marry Captain Mark Phillips, the late monarch wore a blue outfit and hat designed by Sir Norman Hartnell.

In 1981, at the wedding of now-King Charles and the late Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II opted for a vibrant shade of turquoise in a more loose-fitting gown.

Then in 1986, the late monarch chose a pastel blue pleated skirt with a matching pastel blue overcoat for Prince Andrew’s nuptials to Sarah Ferguson.

However, all three of these weddings that Queen Elizabeth II wore a blue outfit to, ended up in divorce.

When Princess Anne remarried in 1992 to Timothy Laurence, the late Queen wore a bright green coat instead.

When Prince Edward tied the knot with Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth wore a lilac gown and a matching fascinator.

At the wedding of King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2005, the Queen didn’t even attend the civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall.

But she did attend the blessing ceremony afterwards, shocking many royal fans by wearing a white coat which is normally seen as a faux pas for wedding guests.

However, style experts have noted that Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t the average wedding guest and that it was only acceptable for someone like her to upstage a bride.

Style experts at Nasty Gal told Express.co.uk: “There’s an old superstition on wearing blue to weddings – ‘Married in blue, you will always be true’ so it’s surprising that the late Queen has worn blue to so many royal weddings which have ended in divorce.

“Blue can often symbolise strength and authority, so it’s definitely a colour that’s fit for a Queen.”

According to the experts, it wasn’t just the late Queen who opted to wear blue at these weddings.

They added: “It’s interesting that both the late Queen and the Queen Mother wore blue to Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s weddings.

“The similar colour choices show the unity and bond the two had, showing the love the Queen had for her mother and family. They also both wore blue dresses to Prince William’s christening.”

The experts expanded on what the colour blue can mean and represent, as opposed to more “warmer” colours.

“Blue can be seen as a cold colour, whereas yellow, green and purple are much warmer tones,” the experts claimed.

“They match the general feeling of weddings and celebrations of love.

“The late Queen wore yellow to Kate Middleton’s wedding and green to Meghan Markle’s.

“Both are colours that represent spring, new beginnings and growth.

“These were the weddings of the new generation of royals, and the colours the late Queen wore could symbolise the hope she had for the new stage of the Royal Family.

“Clearly, both marriages are thriving which could mean they’re lucky colours for love!”
