Reverse ‘crepey’ skin with ‘game-changer’ product – it’s not moisturiser

Collagen production decreases with age and is responsible for skin wrinkling and sagging.

While fine lines and texture are most visible around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, they can result in a “crepey” looking complexion over time.

Moisturiser is one way to make skin feel more supple and plump but the actual results may not be as effective.

In fact, according to Victoria Renee, skincare expert and director of research at City Beauty, reversing age-related texture takes more than moisture. She claimed that instead, it is best to focus on hydration.

Victoria said: “Moisture and hydration are often used interchangeably but the difference between them is startling.”

Though there are very few disadvantages to using a good moisturiser in a skincare routine, the beauty expert noted that it can damage dehydrated, mature complexions.

Victoria claimed that using thick lotions on the skin may give the illusion that it is adequately hydrated when in fact, it isn’t.

She explained: “My clients know there’s only one way to effectively erase crepey skin. I’ve been teaching them this method for years.

“Everyone should understand moisture versus hydration. It’s a game-changer for thin, wrinkled skin — and every other sign of ageing for that matter.”

The main difference between hydrators and moisturisers is that the latter seals moisture into the skin.

But if there’s nothing for the skin to absorb in the first place, the results will only show on the surface.

That’s why experts such as Kate Somerville recommend using a combination of the two to both saturate the skin with hydration and lock it in.

Of course, the hydrating ingredients should be applied first to maximise the benefits.

Sharing advice on her blog, the skin health expert claimed: “Using a topical hydrator such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid infuses cells with water, improving their moisture content and helping to smooth the appearance of wrinkles.”

She noted that using moisturisers on their own is only effective when the problems appear on the surface – for example, if there is flakiness or peeling.

Kate added: “If your skin is dry, a moisturizer will help to alleviate the symptoms. A hydrator, on the other hand, will function best if your skin is dehydrated.”
