‘Some sharp lines, and the unhinged energy is hard to resist’ – Bottoms review | Films | Entertainment

By now, you should have twigged that you’re not watching a typical high-school comedy.

The two students in question, who dutifully trudge off to the principal’s office, are lesbian best pals PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri).

They look around 10 years too old to be at school but, by this point, realism has completely gone out of the window.

PJ and Josie are at the bottom of the pecking order. Which is a big problem as they have vowed to lose their virginities before they get to college.

To get close to cheerleaders Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s supermodel daughter), the pair launch a self-defence class in the school gym.

When the classes turn into the gruesome “fight club”, it all gets even weirder.

There’s some mild mocking of the victim culture of today’s teens but Bottoms isn’t really about anything. It’s just a string of surreal sketches, tied together by the thinnest of plots.

Not all the jokes work but Edebiri and Sennott have great comic timing, there are some sharp lines, and the unhinged energy is hard to resist.
