Student dead in shooting outside Lamar High School in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas — One student was killed in a shooting outside a Dallas-area high school on Monday morning and police arrested a minor suspected of opening fire, officials said.

The shooting began on the Lamar High School campus in the suburb of Arlington around 6:55 a.m., before many students arrived for the first day back to classes after spring break, according to police and school district officials.

One student was injured by gunfire, another was hurt by “debris from the shooting,” and both received medical care, Arlington Independent School District spokeswoman Anita Foster said.

NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported one student died and the other appears to have minor injuries.

The boy who was shot, an injured girl and the male suspect are all under 17, police said.

“We do believe that we have the one shooter detained and the weapon recovered,” Arlington police spokesperson Jesse Minton told reporters.

In the early stages of the investigation, Monday’s attack did not appear to be an attempted mass shooting, officials said.

“We don’t believe that this was anything where the student (suspect) was going to try to shoot multiple people at the school,” Minton said. “We believe it may have been targeted.”

Arlington police said the suspect never entered the school and was arrested soon after officers arrived on the scene. They said the scene was secure in a tweet at 7:21 a.m.

The suspect will not be publicly identified because of his age, police spokesperson Tim Ciesco said.

NBC News does not usually name minors charged with a crime, even those charged as adults.

Foster said school buses and other arriving students were diverted from the campus before classes were set to start. Officials urged parents and others to stay away from the campus while police investigate.

Just after 10:40 a.m. local time, police tweeted that the search of the school had been completed and officials would begin releasing students for the day.
