Style expert claims women over 50 ‘must own’ one key wardrobe staple

Style is totally individual and varies from person to person. However, having said that there are some must-have items that make any closet better.

According to influencer Deirdre, who runs the popular YouTube channel 50 & Fabulous with My Friend Deirdre, mature women “really need to own” a classic skirt.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk: “A classic skirt is a must-have in your style arsenal. Whether you choose a pencil skirt, pleated, knee-length, A-line, midi or maxi, they are one of the most versatile pieces you will own.

“Wear it with a classic shirt in your favourite colour and heels to look more formal or with a t-shirt or top and a pair of trainers for a more casual, ‘everyday’ look.”

A classic skirt will never go out of style, and can take a woman through all four seasons. Deirdre suggested: “In the winter, zhuzh up your look with a great pair of long boots and a camel coat for added timeless style.”

A classic skirt can be “maximised” by mixing and matching to be worn for different occasions and to be dressed up or down, with the addition of a few well-chosen accessories.

Deirdre suggested that colour is crucial, advising that for “added style points”, ladies should try to select their most flattering neutral colour for this item.

Then, choose additional pieces around that tone or in colours which complement your chosen neutral. She explained: “It will be so much easier to create cohesive outfits that way.”

According to the expert, in addition to a classic skirt, all women over 50 must own one key accessory.

Forget shoving everything into your pockets and looking bulky, Deirdre told the ladies to invest in a “tote back to throw everything in”.

This accessory should preferably be in a neutral shade such as black, brown or tan, as this “will go with everything”, or in your own personal neutral shade of choice. She said: “Then, you don’t have to find a different bag for each outfit!”

The expert added: “The larger size tote bags are perfect for combining functionality and style.

“Alternatively, you could take the opportunity to create a statement with your choice of bag. How about bright cherry red, the colour of the season and so cheerful too!”

Deirdre also revealed another three key items women over 50 “really need to own” – they’ll make you look better.
