The Flash star breaks silence on ‘difficult’ Ezra Miller controversy | Films | Entertainment

The Flash fans are gearing up to see Barry Allen speed onto screens one more time to bring the DC Studios’ universe to an end.

But the lead-up to the movie’s release has been plagued with a number of issues, including the arrest of its star Ezra Miller last year.

The American star was arrested last year in Hawai’i and charged in March 2022 with disorderly conduct and harassment after an incident at a bar. The Evening Standard reported Miller “yelled obscenities at a woman” before “lunging at a man”. A temporary restraining order was issued against the actor after a couple alleged Miller “entered their room and threatened them”. Just a few weeks later, Miller was arrested once again for allegedly “throwing a chair which hit a woman”.

Since these incidents, Miller has been treated for “complex mental health issues” and apologised, saying: “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental-health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in my life.” (sic)

Michael Shannon, the actor reprising his role as General Zod in The Flash, recently opened up about working with Miller after all of these arrests and issues.

Speaking to Variety, Shannon said: “If you’re talking about Ezra [Miller], I thought Ezra was lovely – very kind to me when I was there.”

Shannon went on to say: “It’s difficult to talk about, but I always give people a lot of slack in this business, because there’s a lot of people in this business that have issues. And some people have more privacy than others.”

The 48-year-old said he “feels sorry” for actors in the spotlight when they’re getting “picked on” by the press.

“I feel for them,” he continued. “Even if it’s warranted, it’s still a horrible situation.”

Mostly, Shannon was reluctant to join The Flash as Zod once again because of how things were left between DC Studios and his former director, Zack Snyder, who he worked with on Man of Steel.

The American star confessed: “I was hesitant [to come back] because I wasn’t really happy about what happened to Zack Snyder in that whole deal.”

Snyder left in the middle of filming Justice League after suffering a family tragedy. His movie was then taken over by Warner Bros and the Avengers boss Joss Whedon, much to the chagrin of fans and critics.

Shannon went on: “I really love Zack. The fact that Zack asked me to play that part to begin with — that’s probably the biggest surprise of my career. It almost felt like a practical joke. I was like: ‘You’re kidding me, right?'”

The actor added that he built a strong rapport with The Flash director Andy Muschietti: “I liked Andy, and I said: ‘Andy, look — I just want to get Zack’s blessing on this because it just doesn’t feel right without that.'”

Snyder eventually gave Shannon his blessing to join the movie, and in The Flash he’ll be going up against Kara Zor-El – Supergirl – for the first time, in the absence of Superman star Henry Cavill.

The Flash hits cinemas on June 16, 2023.
