The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York tops poll of UK’s favourite Christmas songs | Music | Entertainment

As December dawns those classic Christmas songs are only going to become more and more frequent on the radio and streaming playlists.

Now Brits have voted for their favourite of all time after Ladbrokes LIVE polled 1506 UK-based people.

And it turns out the winner is The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale of New York with 17 per cent of the vote.

Following the death of the band’s singer Shane MacGowan yesterday, fans are hoping to make the song UK Christmas No 1 for the first time.

Incredibly the festive favourite has only ever reached No 2, but has been in the Top 20 every Christmas since 2005.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes LIVE said: “The bells will no doubt be ringing out for Shane MacGowan this year.

“We’d be amazed if Fairytale of New York – the nation’s favourite festive track – isn’t top of the charts come December 25th.”
