Tom Cruise had brutal foul-mouthed advice for Emily Blunt after on-set tears | Films | Entertainment

Tom Cruise has always been a harsh critic. You only need to look at his alleged rants during 2020’s COVID-19 lockdown shoots to see how passionate he is about getting filmmaking correct. While he has previously berated his crew for their actions, he has also hit out at his co-stars – as revealed by Emily Blunt.

The British actress worked with the Mission: Impossible star on the 2014 science-fiction movie Edge of Tomorrow. Together, Blunt and Cruise’s characters fought to save the universe from a powerful alien force who were using futuristic time-manipulation technology to win a war against humanity.

The humans fought these terrifying creatures – the Mimics – using exoskeleton suits to enhance their strength and abilities. However, in reality, these suits were painful to endure, Blunt recently revealed.

Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, she said: “We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way. When you hear the word tactile, you think that sounds nice and cosy. There was nothing cosy about these suits.”

Blunt confessed she truly suffered while wearing the suit – to the point where she became entirely overwhelmed.

Blunt said: “He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes: ‘Come on, stop being such a p**sy, OK?'”

Over the course of the film’s extensive shoot, Blunt and Cruise got to know one another very well. And as a result, their story on the big screen was even better. So much so that fans have been yearning for a sequel ever since.

Blunt also spoke candidly about the possibility of a second movie in the series. She confessed: “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.”

Doug Liman, the director of Edge of Tomorrow, has also spoken out about sequel plans.

He previously told Collider: “It’s one of these things where if Tom, Emily, and I were to say: ‘We’re ready to pull the trigger on this script,’ it’s Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt – the film gets made. That’s pretty much how Hollywood works. The stars are the gatekeepers. If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it’s going to happen.”

He added: “For [the first movie], the script wasn’t there when we started shooting. Tom and I often laugh about this, that during prep on that movie we’d say to ourselves, ‘There’s nothing like a looming start date for the shoot to put pressure down to get the script right. And then while we were shooting the movie, we’d say to ourselves, ‘There’s nothing like a looming wrap date to really put pressure down to getting the script done.’ Then when while we’re editing the movie, we’re like, ‘There’s nothing like a looming release date to force you to get the script right.’ These are really big, imaginative movies.”

Edge of Tomorrow is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
