Winds of Winter release – George RR Martin speaks out on 12 year delay | Books | Entertainment

It’s been a few months since George RR Martin gave an update on his progress with The Winds of Winter, which has now been delayed for 12 years

In the time since the release of A Dance with Dragons, his latest book in the A Song of Ice Fire series, the entirety of the Game of Thrones TV show has been and gone.

The showrunners had to rely on the slow-paced author’s plot points from his last two unwritten books to finish the storyline.

Now over four years on from the end of the HBO hit and the 75-year-old has given a rare comment on where he’s at with The Winds of Winter.

A clip from a recent public appearance with fellow author Cassandra Clare has been posted on the A Song of Ice and Fire Reddit containing this moment.

In this footage, Martin murmurs: “I’ve been working. I’m 12 years late with Winds of Winter, as we know.

“I’m just going to put it right out there, you guys don’t have to pester me about it.”

Around a year ago, the Game of Thrones author appeared on Stephen Colbert’s Tooning Out The News with fellow writer James Patterson, where he shared he’d written 75 per cent of the upcoming fantasy novel.

Martin said he’d written about 1100-1200 words of The Winds of Winter and that there was still 400-500 to go.

Given the rate he’s taken to pen 75 per cent of the book, we’re probably still a couple of years at least away from the publication of the mammoth novel.

At this point, the author will be pushing 80 and will still have A Dream of Spring to go to conclude A Song of Ice and Fire.
