According to current Census data, 42 percent of marriages in the UK have ended in divorce, with 37 percent recorded in the US. But while it’s not the ideal end to a relationship, many women have found solace in celebrating their new-found single status. And this was the case for Maja Proescholdt, from Minneapolis (US), who organised her own divorce party after her six-and-a-half-year relationship broke down.
Maja decided to mark her divorce by throwing a party at her home in New York, where she decorated the property with banners and invited friends and family to join her celebrations.
Her six and half year relationship came to an end in 2020 after just over four years of being married.
After the split, the newly single 30-year-old felt compelled to embark on a new chapter of her life with confidence rather than getting hung up on her relationship status.
Maja said: “I decided to have a divorce party for myself where I invited all my close friends (I’d have invited family too if they weren’t all in the US). The party was at my house for cake, before going out for drinks and dancing in town.”

Having taken charge of the planning for her party, the newly divorced woman spared no expense when it came to the finer details.
She even splashed out on a custom-made cake from a local bakery which she described as “the divorce cake of dreams”.
Maja explained: “They sorted all of the details exactly how I wanted, particularly the “Thank U Next” writing on the cake.
“For my party decorations, I had a banner that said ‘Finally Divorced’ and one that said ‘Boy Bye’. I also had a ‘Finally Divorced’ sash and Divorced crown to complete my outfit!”
Maja decided to throw the party to mark the end of a long few months trying to finalise the divorce and move on without her partner.
She noted that while there were “a lot of reasons” why she had the party, it was largely down to the overwhelming feeling that she “definitely wanted to celebrate” her strength in dealing with it all.
The divorced woman said: “The process dragged on for so long, and towards the end, I often worried that I’d never actually get divorced and never be free from my ex… So when the divorce was finalized, I definitely wanted to celebrate!”
Despite filing for divorce in March 2020, the process took two whole years to finalise.

And as much as the party was about celebrating her perseverance, she noted that the experience took its toll on her mental health.
Maja said: “At that point, my sadness and grief from the loss of my relationship faded with time, and my overwhelming feeling of getting divorced was one of relief and empowerment.
“It felt amazing to get together with my friends and celebrate being divorced, being single, and being free.”
Now “proud” of her divorced status, Maja urged others to consider celebrating “unconventional” moments in their lives too.
And according to Jessica Flinn-Allen, founder and CEO of Jessica Flinn Jewellery, more and more people are following in the same footsteps regarding modern marriage and divorce.
She said: “We love it when a customer comes in to celebrate their divorce with a new ring. It’s an important part of their life and a mark of a new beginning.
“Divorce is normally something that is frowned upon and tends to have negative connotations, which is why we love it when customers come in to celebrate themselves because they are doing what’s right for them.”
In fact, wedding and engagement ring specialists have noticed a recent increase in the requests they have seen for divorce rings, with a 300 percent interest in remodel requests, which is usually a divorce ring.
