Barclays will be closing 18 bank branches across England and Scotland in September to account for customers making fewer visits in person.

The shuttered branches will join Barclays’ larger list of at least 156 locations to close down over the course of 2023 and 2024.

A statement on Barclays’ website reads: “Our branch network and the colleagues who work in them remain a vital part of what we offer our customers.

“Yet with customers visiting our branches less and less each year, we must constantly assess how and why our branches are used and make decisions based on that insight.

“There will be times when this means that we will make the difficult decision to close a branch.”

The full list of 18 Barclays branches to close in September includes:

  • Market Street, Wellingborough – September 1, 2023
  • The Arcade, Westfield, London – September 1, 2023
  • Putney High Street, London – September 1, 2023
  • Finchley Road, London – September 6, 2023
  • 16 High Street, Harpenden – September 6, 2023
  • 100 Market Street, St Andrews, Scotland – September 8, 2023
  • 39 High Street, Haverhill – September 8, 2023
  • High Street, St Ives – September 8, 2023
  • Killigrew Street, Falmouth – September 15, 2023
  • Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge – September 15, 2023
  • Bank Street, Hemsworth – September 15, 2023
  • Breadmarket Street, Lichfield – September 15, 2023
  • The Shopping Village, Castle Point Centre, Bournemouth – September 20, 2023
  • Market Place, Pontefract – September 22, 2023
  • Evesham Walk, Redditch – September 29, 2023
  • The Strand, Bude – September 29, 2023
  • Hanover Square, London – September 29, 2023.

To maintain face-to-face support in areas where footfall has reduced, Barclays is instead pursuing a more “flexible” approach to help customers.

A Barclays spokesperson previously told Express.co.uk: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

“Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 200 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our new banking pods.

“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”

Under the new model, the bank works with local councils and communities to arrange a presence in places such as town halls and libraries, offering in-person banking support.

Barclays Local colleagues provide in-person assistance, helping customers with their everyday finances and money management needs. Each Barclays Local also offers free digital skills workshops and fraud and scams awareness events for the community.
