Nvidia’s AI game demo adds dialogue trees everywhere. While exciting, it may not revolutionize gaming as we know it. #friendlytecheditor

Nvidia has introduced an exciting new AI-driven game demo titled Convert Protocol. In this game, players take on the role of a detective tasked with finding a specific individual in a high-end hotel. The unique aspect of this demo is the use of voice commands through a microphone instead of traditional preset dialogue options.

I had the opportunity to witness this demo alongside other journalists in a private showing. As Nvidia’s Seth Schneider guided us through the experience, the potential for unrestricted gameplay was evident. This interactive approach allows players to ask any questions they desire, creating a truly immersive detective game where dialogue choices are limitless.

During the demo, Schneider encouraged us to interact with AI-driven NPCs, such as a door greeter. While some interesting conversations took place, it was clear that the NPCs were designed to stay on topic and avoid deviating from the game’s narrative. This controlled environment ensured that interactions with the AI remained focused and relevant.

Despite the fascinating technology behind Nvidia’s AI, I found that it primarily expanded the dialogue options available in the game rather than significantly enhancing the gameplay experience. The AI’s responses, while contextually appropriate, did not offer a vastly different experience compared to traditional dialogue systems.

While the possibilities presented by Nvidia’s AI are intriguing, it remains to be seen how developers will integrate this technology into future games. However, I am skeptical that it will revolutionize game design and gameplay dynamics overnight.

There is merit in the traditional approach of preset dialogue options, as it ensures that NPCs provide valuable information without the risk of crucial details being obscured by an unpredictable AI. Perhaps utilizing AI for non-essential NPCs could be a more effective use of this technology, rather than overwhelming players with endless dialogue choices.
