Arnold Schwarzenegger blasts Terminator series after flop – ‘I’m done’ | Films | Entertainment

Arnold Schwarzenegger has become synonymous with the Terminator series over the years. He debuted as the titular war machine in the original 1984 movie.

Schwarzenegger has been a mainstay in most of the film’s sequels, with the latest picture to hit cinemas – 2019’s Temrminator: Dark Fate – acting as a reboot for the series.

Despite being the face of the series for almost four decades, the Austrian star explained that his time in the series has come to an end.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter he said: “The franchise is not done. Iā€™m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator.”

He went on to add: “Someone has to come up with a great idea [for the next movie.”

Schwarzenegger wasn’t completely down on the Terminator series, though.

“The first three movies were great,ā€ he gushed. “Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor. Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didnā€™t close the deal as far as Iā€™m concerned.”

He added that he “knew ahead of time” they would not “close the deal” because they were simply “just not well written”.

The latest Terminator movie – Dark Fate – hit cinemas on October 23, 2019, and was later deemed one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time.

The picture was made with a $185 million budget and earned $261 million at the box office. The production budget and the marketing and distribution meant the movie reportedly needed to earn more than $450 million to break even.

James Cameron, who executive produced the picture, later told Deadline that the film was not successful because of some choices made behind the scenes.

Cameron said: “I think the problem, and Iā€™m going to wear this one, is that I refused to do it without Arnold. [Director] Tim [Miller] didnā€™t want Arnold, but I said: ā€˜Look, I donā€™t want that. Arnold and I have been friends for 40 years, I could hear it, and it would go like this: ā€˜Jim, I canā€™t believe youā€™re making a Terminator movie without me.'”

He went on to add: “I think what happened is I think the movie could have survived having Linda in it, I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, sheā€™s 60-something, heā€™s 70-something, all of a sudden it wasnā€™t your Terminator movie, it wasnā€™t even your dadā€™s Terminator movie, it was your granddadā€™s Terminator movie. And we didnā€™t see that.”
