Barbie smashes Warner Bros box office record surpassing The Dark Knight | Films | Entertainment

Barbie has had an astounding box office opening, the biggest of 2023 so far, with $362 million taken over the weekend.

This is an incredible feat given that the Margot Robbie movie was going up against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which has taken over $180 million so far.

For comparison, The Super Mario Bros Movie made over $377 million in its global opening weekend and has gone on to become the highest-grossing film of the year so far with over $1.3 billion made.

Given this, it’s not unreasonable to believe that Barbie could well become a member of the $1 billion box office club.

In the meantime, Barbie has broken a Warner Bros record that has surpassed Batman epic The Dark Knight.

According to Variety, Barbie made $26 million yesterday, which is the best Monday in Warner Bros history.

The record was previously held by Nolan’s The Dark Knight which made $24.6 million (not adjusted for inflation) on a Monday back in 2008.

Barbie has also joined the Top 15 Mondays of all time that didn’t fall on a holiday weekend.

Barbie has now made over $400 million worldwide after the biggest debut for a film director by a woman, Greta Gerwig.

She overtakes Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 MCU blockbuster Captain Marvel on $153 million.

Barbie is out now in cinemas.
