Benedict Cumberbatch announces MCU return sparking Doctor Strange 3 hopes | Films | Entertainment

Last year, Benedict Cumberbatch starred in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness having also featured in Spider-Man: No Way Home just a few months prior.

His second MCU solo movie concluded with Charlize Theron’s Clea, a sorceress from the Dark Dimension (and lover in the comics), turning up and enlisting his help.

Since then there’s been no news of when the star will return to the franchise, until now.

Speaking on JW3 Speaker Series, the 46-year-old teased: “There are some Marvel capers in the making next year.”

With this in mind, there are a number of projects the actor could be talking about, especially as he mentioned plural projects.

If Cumberbatch is shooting scenes as Doctor Strange in 2024, this likely means it will be for movies released in 2025 and 2026.

Of those announced so far, there’s Fantastic Four (May 2, 2025), which hasn’t had a main cast revealed just yet.

Plus there’s Avengers 5 aka Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which has been delayed to May 1, 2026 by a year.

On top of those, there are yet-to-be-announced Marvel projects that are assumed to happen including Doctor Strange 3.

And let’s not forget that Mahershala Ali’s Blade arrives in early 2025. Given that’s at the darker end of the franchise perhaps the sorcerer will make a cameo there as he did in Thor Ragnarok.

Whatever happens, it will be a welcome return to Cumberbatch’s Avengers after some time away.
