Ed Sheeran lyrics ‘hint at marriage issues’ in new album | Music | Entertainment

Ed Sheeran surprised his fandom earlier this year when he announced his new album, Autumn Variations, would be hitting streaming services and store shelves this month.

This is the star’s first release from his own record label, Gingerbread Man, and his second album of the year after May’s Subtract, the final record in his Mathematics series.

But the new record’s lyrics describe a failing relationship, according to The Sun and the Daily Mail, and could be hinting towards his marriage with Cherry Seaborn.

This is made evident with such powerful lines as: “I can’t help but be destructive right now,” in the track Punchline.

Sheeran goes on in the song: “It’s been weeks since I saw your outline / In my room is a silence so loud. This is what losing hope might sound like.”

Sheeran has had 14 number-one singles in the UK and often writes quite profoundly.

However, some of these lyrics have a more literal tinge to them and specifically reference a break-up

On one powerful chorus of the same song, Sheeran belts out: “I can’t help it but I love you so / I can’t take this letting go / I still feel like we could work it out or something. All I am is only flesh and bone / Why’s your heart so freezing cold?”

However, Sheeran previously stated that this record was written both from the perspective of his own personal experience and from the experiences he witnessed his friends going through.

Sheeran said at the time: “When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on, and when I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time.”

A further lyric in That’s On Me has him singing: “This is not the end of our lives / this is just a bump in the ride / I know that it’ll be alright.”

In The Day I Was Born, he added: “I broke apart from my lover a couple months ago / if they were here then I guess I wouldn’t be alone.”

The pair have two daughters, one-year-old Jupiter and two-year-old Lyra.
