Wilko has entered administration after the firm failed to secure a rescue deal, putting hundreds of stores at risk of closure.
Wilko runs more than 400 stores across the UK but the bosses were “left with no choice but to take this unfortunate action”.
The retailer filed a notice of its intention to appoint an administrator last Thursday and had hoped to figure out a sale in the meantime.
However, talks have stalled and a source told Sky News that the administration today was “inevitable”.
Wilko’s board has now appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) after talks with a number of potential rescuers halted.
It has not been confirmed what will happen to the 400 shops and 12,000 staff after the move takes place.
All sites will continue to operate as normal for now until an update is announced.
Although the Wilko has now stopped processing all online deliveries and shoppers are limited to click and collect orders instead.
