Aldi is expanding its store portfolio with 500 new sites set to open, 20 of which will hit high streets this year.
Its 100th store, which opened in Woking, Surrey, marked a milestone in the company’s plan to operate 1,500 stores.
It comes as part of a £1.4bn, two-year investment pledge to open a number of new sites, which was announced earlier this week.
Aldi bosses claimed that the ideal properties for its new locations would include freehold town centre stores, edge-of-centre locations and retail park sites “suitable for property development”.
Potential locations for the additional new Aldi’s have now been revealed by the company.
These are the supermarket’s top locations:
- London – Kensington and Hackney
- South West – Penzance and Bath
- South East – Maidenhead and Worthing
- North West – Warrington and Bramhall
- North East – Newcastle Upon Tyne and South Shields
- East Midlands – Nottingham and Derby
- West Midlands – Birmingham and Warwick
- East of England – Cambridge and Brentwood
- Yorkshire and the Humber – Harrogate and York
- Wales – Cardiff and Chepstow
- Scotland – Clarkston and Cathcart
Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi UK said: “We want to make our great value groceries accessible to all and to do that we need more stores, particularly in towns and areas that don’t have an Aldi already.
“The areas we’ve identified in our latest list are places where there is demand for stores, and we are committed to continue investing until we can bring our quality products and unbeatable prices to as many people as possible.”
Potential retail park sites will be among the biggest new locations based on the supermarket’s “ideal” requirements.
It said that land suitable for property development should be able to accommodate a 20,000 square-foot store with around 100 parking spaces.
The newest Woking store is one of more than 150 sites that the retailer now has in southern England, despite starting out in the Midlands.
Birmingham residents were lucky enough to welcome the budget chain’s first UK store back in 1990 when it opened in Stechford.
